The film talks about the problems faced by an ordinary Malayali employee in his company and also in the gulf region. P. Madhavan Nair (Mohanlal) works for a company in Abu Dhabi which is owned by an Arab Hosni Mubarak(Shakti Kapoor), with whom he shares an unusual friendship. Hosni trusts Madhavan to the core and even shares his secret code number of his cash safe. Madhavan Nair has a lover, Meenakshi (Lakshmi Rai) whom he met accidentally while in jewelry. Once he returns home from work and discovers that his lover (Meenakshi) is apparently having an affair with his boss, Arab. On the edge of a nervous breakdown, Madhavan drives around the city until his old friend Abdu (Mukesh) jumps into his car and attempts to rob him. The story runs to the comedy track when both of them accidentally found Eliana (Bhavana)inside dickey of the car in kidnapped position. Later it was known, she staged a drama to extract money from her own father Thomas (Nedumudi Venu), which got spoiled due to their presence and police behind them. Together they plot to rob Hosni's safe and the story moves with several twists and turns.
Shooting for the film began in Abu Dhabi on March 2011.[3] On 16 March 2011, while filming in the desert in Abu Dhabi, Canadian/Hollywood movie director James Cameron visited their set and had a 3-hour long chat with Priyadarshan, Mohanlal, and the rest of the crew.[4] The initial title of the film was Arabeem Ottakom P. Madhavan Nayarum only but later the title was first changed to Oru Maruboomikadha and finally to the current title. In the gulf the film was release under the title Oru Marubhoomikadha. This was following tremendous pressure from NRIs in the Gulf.[5][6] There were reports that the Arabs were unhappy with the initial title and also hinted at banning the release of the film in the Middle East.[7]
